Remember the good old days of turn-based tactical games? From the good old Ninja Brothers on the NES to the evolutionary Super Mario RPG on the SNES and later, a host of PC-based titles; these games, even though lacking the nerve-raking pace, were endlessly fun to play and required quite an amount of skills to win.

For those who have the name of this title – “Worms”, you probably already love this title – there have been a host of PC-based games in this genre already, like the ever-lovable Worms 4 Mayhem. The objective is simple – you guide a pack of worms, which go against other similar worm-packs, battling out with all you have – the idea of cartoonish worms on a role-based tactical game was an immensely thoughtful addition – the funny character animation and the hilarious comments of the worms always helps to keep you cool in the heat of the game.

Well now, we have the worms on our s60v5 platforms too. Worms 2010 is a touch based worm game, designed for phones like the 5230.

Unlike the PC counterparts, the game is a 2D side-scroller. Nevertheless, the environments look plush and pleasing, and the worms are animated as hilariously as the always were. The environment is fully destructible – this means each grenade you through will leave a hole on the ground or bring a wall down, which will last so till the end of the game.

The worms’ arsenal should not be under-estimated. These worms are armed to the teeth with a wide range of weapons like from shotguns to grenades to bazookas. And there are more, like a ‘Super Sheep‘ that jumps and runs around wildly before it explodes in a kaboom, and the Air Attack, wherein you can call a bomber to bomb a target location you specify.

There are quick-play, custom match and campaign modes (the last one being the main story-mode of the game) – and there is multiplayer too. There’s a nag here – the multiplayer game is of pass-n-play variety, while you have to pass your phone to your opponent after every turn. That’s quite understandable and adequate considering this is a turn-based game – but indeed, we’d have loved to have bluetooth multiplayer facility built in.

Besides this, the game is a bit on the slower-side. The worms are really sloathy in moving around – add up to that the navigability constraints on a resistive touchscreen. This adds up to an average one whole minute per turn.

But none of these are deal-breakers, and considering this is a free proposition from EA, is definitely worth trying out.
